He doesn't disappoint, perfectly bringing Sondheim's bleak London - "a great black pit" inhabited by the "vermin of the world" - to the screen. Also, like I said, there is an implied rape early on in the film, and it is very unpleasant and shocking, even though we do not see any of it, excpect for onlookers grisly and horrifically enthusiastic expressions. I was absolutly traumatized by this movie as an adult, and so in retrospect letting my daughter watch this was undoubtably the silliest decision i have ever made. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), who remembers Todd from when he was the happily married Benjamin Barker, turns the fresh cadaver meat into tasty meat pies. It stars Johnny Depp in the title role as a man who escapes from prison and decides to exact revenge on the judge who tore his family apart with the help of Mrs. And what finally leads to him acting on his impulses? It is one of musical theatre’s oddest yet most welcome creations. The first thing to be said about Tim Burton's "Sweeney Todd" is that it's quite faithful to Stephen Sondheim's 1979 musical while being every inch a movie.The second is that it's bloody wonderful. The songs are great as well and it is one of my favourite horror movies. The first time I saw it at 17, there were a few parts I had to cover my eyes because I just couldn't take the blood, and I have a fairly strong stomach.
Sweeney Todd's sharply literal take on "man devouring man" – and its gruesome, self-destructive revenge of the have-nots on the haves – seems more relevant to our own time than ever. Blood is frequently shown gushing out like a geyser and often covers Sweeney. I don't recall any instance of an F bomb being dropped, but there is an IMPLIED rape/sexual assault early on in the film.
